Hey, there! Nice to meet you!

Welcome—we are so glad you stopped by. For years, my husband, David, has urged me to start a blog. While the idea sounded great, I would inevitably think ”who on Earth would want to read anything I write?” But, the idea continued to niggle, somewhere in the deep recesses of my brain and would come to the forefront now and then only to be met with skepticism, a little self deprivation, and inevitably, inaction. The truth is, I was a “writer” in search of a topic. Well, I think I have found it… more on that in a moment.

First, for those of you who know us already, feel free to skip to the next paragraph. For those of you whom I have never had the pleasure to meet, hello, there! My husband and I have been married for almost twelve years and we have three daughters and seven grandkids who live all over the country—from North Carolina to Oregon. We have two dogs who will likely feature prominently on this blog—Hadden (a schnauzer mix) and Ajax (a Rottweiler). We love to golf, cook great food, and drink “good” wine. I use quotes around good as I am not exactly a wine expert or a sommelier… just someone who likes to drink a glass of wine here and there and if I like it… well, it’s “good”! We also love to travel, read, and I also happen to enjoy writing. David, not so much. If it’s on here, chances are I wrote it.

My husband is retiring from the Army in two months. For years, we have been searching for what to do to commemorate his 35 years of service. Maybe a great trip somewhere? That’s where this all began. Originally, we were set on a two week trip to France. The idea was sound—start in Paris, move to the Champagne region (Champagne being my favorite of the ”good” wines) and then head to Normandy. However, I ended up tearing my ACL and then COVID hit, and well… we shelved that idea for another day. What about keeping it more local? Aha! There it was—the idea we would run with. We would buy a travel trailer, load up the pups, and travel the country! We loved the idea of seeing places we had never seen, meeting new people, and seeing friends and family. It was perfect. Only problem? I am still in the Army (well, not a problem, per se… I absolutely love my job) and that meant I would be unable to take months at a time to tour the country. So, for now, we will take small trips to see what we can see.

So… this is a travel blog, then? ish… Really, this will be a collection of pictures and stories from our travels where we plan to share with you some local flair along the way. We are huge fans of finding wineries, breweries, and distilleries on our travels and we plan to share that experience with you, and also to learn from you… if we are going somewhere you have been, we are happy to take recommendations!

Finally, a bit about our home away from home. Her name is Wilhelmina von Kampen and she is a 26 foot Grand Design XLS 22 RBE. We purchased her from a lovely couple in Wilson, NC who decided to go back to their Class A RV. (WILson… WILhelmina… see what we did there?) She is a sophisticated lady who enjoys the open road. Turn ons—smooth drives and level surfaces. Turn offs—just sitting idle in our driveway and high winds.

We will begin the adventure, well, tomorrow, when we visit the Uwharrie National Forest for WVK’s maiden voyage. We hope you will join us!

Cheers! Megan and David
